9 May 2024 - Psalm 9

God is indeed a shelter for the oppressed

Psalm 9:9-10(NLT) states: The LORD is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble. Those who know your name trust in you, for you, O LORD, do not abandon those who search for you.

David, in verse 9, uses the term refuge. This is often interpreted as a place of protection, safety, or shelter. The Lord serves as our stronghold, a fortress that is impregnable and safe from adversaries. Though He is always available as our refuge, there are times we become anxious and forget to turn to Him. In moments of trouble or uncertainty, our instinct should be to seek God's protection.

The Message translation of Psalm 9:9-10(MSG) puts it beautifully: GOD’s a safe-house for the battered, a sanctuary during bad times. The moment you arrive, you relax; you’re never sorry you knocked.

While life presents its challenges, we can remain confident that the Lord will never abandon those who place their trust in Him. He is our steadfast refuge.

As Psalm 9:10(NIV) affirms: Those who know your name trust in you, for you, LORD, have never forsaken those who seek you.

The term seek in this context is derived from the Hebrew word daresh. This word conveys the idea of searching, inquiring, consulting, and earnestly striving

to promote the welfare of another. It emphasises a genuine and positive attitude. Therefore, in our moments of distress or uncertainty, we should remember to turn to God, place our trust in Him, and earnestly seek His guidance. He promises never to leave us.
