DAY 2 — Zeal Must Be Guarded
2 Timothy 1:6–7 (NIV) “For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”
Focus Thought: Paul tells Timothy to “fan into flame” the gift of God within him. The picture is clear: fire must be tended. An unattended flame can slowly weaken. Ash begins to cover the embers. Eventually, what once burned strongly becomes barely visible. The same can happen spiritually.
We may still love God, but exhaustion, disappointment, distraction, offence, routine, or discouragement can slowly cover the fire. Paul does not tell Timothy to wait passively for the fire to return. He tells him to fan it into flame.
That requires intentionality. Sometimes we need to return to practices that once strengthened our relationship with God: prayer, worship, Scripture, fasting, fellowship, serving, and remembering what God has spoken over our lives.
Sometimes the problem is not that the fire disappeared. It is simply buried beneath too much ash. Hosting His Presence means paying attention to the condition of our hearts. Ask yourself honestly: What is feeding my fire, and what is smothering it?
Perhaps constant distraction has weakened your focus. Perhaps disappointment has made you hesitant to hope again. Perhaps weariness has turned passion into mere routine. Bring it before God. Notice also that Paul speaks about power, love, and self-discipline. Healthy zeal contains all three. Power without love becomes harsh. Passion without discipline burns out. Zeal without dependence becomes human striving. God desires sustainable fire. Don't wait until you feel completely empty to tend your spiritual life. Guard the flame.
What God has ignited in you is worth protecting.
Action for Today Identify one habit or distraction that has weakened your spiritual fire and address it.
Reflective Question: What did you intentionally fan into flame today?
Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me guard what You have placed within me. Remove what smothers the flame and strengthen my devotion. Amen.
Journal Prompt: What is feeding or weakening my fire?
