DAY 7 — Obedience Reflects Christ Himself
Philippians 2:5–8 (NIV) “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!”
Focus Thought: If we ever wonder what surrendered obedience looks like, we need only look at Jesus. Philippians tells us that He humbled Himself and became “obedient to death—even death on a cross.” Jesus' obedience was not convenient. It was costly. In Gethsemane we see the depth of that surrender. Jesus knew what lay ahead. He experienced anguish, yet prayed, “Not my will, but yours be done.” That is the heart of glad obedience.
Gladness does not mean every assignment feels pleasant. Jesus did not enjoy the suffering of the cross. Rather, joyful surrender means that beneath the sacrifice there is wholehearted agreement with the Father's purpose. Jesus trusted His Father completely. He obeyed when obedience cost everything. And through His obedience came salvation for us. The Christian life therefore is not merely about asking, “What would Jesus do?” We are called to receive His very mindset: humility, servanthood, surrender, and obedience.
Hosting His Presence gradually produces this heart within us. As we walk with the Holy Spirit, we become less concerned with defending our rights and increasingly concerned with pleasing our Father. This week has taken us on a journey.
Obedience begins in love. It becomes joy. It aligns our desires with God's will. It moves us from partial to wholehearted obedience. It requires trust. It becomes a blessing to others. And ultimately, it makes our lives look more like Jesus. So finish the week with open hands. Place your plans, dreams, relationships, resources, ministry, future, and desires before Him. Then pray the prayer Jesus modelled: “Father, not my will, but Yours.” That is joyful surrender.
Action for Today Worshipfully surrender every area of your life to God again.
Reflective Question: What aspect of Jesus' obedience is challenging you toward deeper surrender?
Prayer: Jesus, form Your obedient heart in me. May my whole life become a joyful yes to the Father. Amen.
Journal Prompt: What does my wholehearted “yes” look like?
