5 November JOHN 2

Do whatever He tells you

John 2:1-10(NIV) On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They have no more wine.” “Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said, “Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now.”

John 2:5(NIV) His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”

The Berean Literal Bible says: "Whatever He may say to you, do it."

Mary observes: They’ve run out of wine. Jesus responds: Woman, what is that to you and me? My hour has not yet come. Mary ignores it and pushes Him into action. She bypasses Jesus while He’s standing right there and tells the servants: Do whatever he tells you to do. She pushed Him into His first miracle.

Jesus told the stewards to fill the six stone jars of 20–30 gallons each with water.

The powerful words of Mary: Do whatever he tells you – point to the wholehearted trust and abandonment of all else, to the will of God that Mary possessed in her heart.

The first miracle Jesus performed, after being baptised in water and with the Holy Spirit, was to turn water into wine. His mother told the servants: Whatever He says to you, do it! The servants did not know what Jesus was about to do, neither did they understand how He did it, but because they obeyed and did not argue or question Jesus’s command, the miracle took place. Jesus did not touch the water jars; He only gave the instructions. The servants poured water into the jars, drew wine out from the jars, and took it to the master of the feast, who proclaimed it to be the best wine of the feast.

Jesus also wants to use us to do miracles, but it will not happen unless we are obedient.

Exodus 19:8(NIV) The people all responded together, “We will do everything the LORD has said.” So Moses brought their answer back to the LORD.

Exodus 24:3(NIV) When Moses went and told the people all the LORD’S words and laws, they responded with one voice, “Everything the LORD has said we will do.”

Joshua 24:24 And the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the LORD our God and obey him.”

Whatever He may say to you, do it.
