A prayer of urgency, persistence, and expectation
Psalm 5:1-3(NKJV) Give ear to my words, O Lord, Consider my meditation. Give heed to the voice of my cry, My King and my God, For to You I will pray. My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; In the morning I will direct it to You, And I will look up.
We see three times in these first two verses that David is longing for an audience with God. The words give ear, consider, heed, all portray the cry of David’s heart.
His reference to God as My King shows that he understands the lordship, authority, and sovereignty of God. David calls out to God knowing that his help and defence come from God, his King.
David shows us that to approach God in prayer, we ought to have intensity and not a prayer formula. Give ear to my words, - David has an intensity and urgency in his prayer. It is so important for us to move our prayers from the optional to the urgent. How often our prayers merely come from a sense of routine and not a sense of urgency.
It is this spirit of urgency that is needed in our prayers.
Furthermore, we also see a persistence in the prayer David is bringing to God. Twice in verse 3 we read that David prayed in the morning. David was not praying only on one morning. By David saying in the morning, he implies that he was praying every morning.
The third verse ends with David saying that he will wait in expectation for an answer to his prayer. The NKJV says and I will look up. David is offering a prayer in faith and not in doubt.
When we pray, let's not pray out of obligation or routine, but with intensity, urgency, and expectation.
