4 October Leviticus 25

The Year of Jubilee

Leviticus 25:9-10 (NIV) “Then have the trumpet sounded everywhere on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement sound the trumpet throughout your land. Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you; each of you is to return to your family property and to your own clan”.

The Year of Jubilee is one of the most powerful celebrations in the Old Testament. Every 50th year, on the Day of Atonement, God’s people rejoice that their sins have been forgiven. The goat sent into the wilderness symbolises their sins being completely taken away.

During this time, a trumpet is blown throughout the land, and people’s lost property is returned to them. Those who became poor over the past 50 years are suddenly restored. It’s a day of hope for the poor, the needy, and the struggling. It’s a day of joy for everyone. They celebrate the forgiveness of their sins and the chance for a fresh start within their community. Joy and freedom are announced to everyone through the sound of the trumpet.

In the same way, Jesus has forgiven our sins and brought us from death to life. In Him, we have freedom and joy. Jesus preached that the acceptable year of the Lord was here—the Year of Jubilee, which took place every 50th year.

Luke 4:18-19 (AMP) “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me (the Messiah), Because He has anointed Me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent Me to announce release (pardon, forgiveness) to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed (downtrodden, bruised, crushed by tragedy), to proclaim the favourable year of the Lord [the day when salvation and the favour of God abound greatly].”

Jesus was saying, "Everything you’ve been waiting for is here! The Jubilee you’ve been hoping for is right in front of you... I AM your Jubilee. I am your Messiah. The age of salvation has begun—it’s no longer just something you hope for in the future. Your Messiah is here! Salvation has come!"

From that moment, people no longer had to stay poor, heartbroken, trapped, blind, or hurt. Jubilee became more than just a special year—it became a person.

Jubilee is a year of faith, a time when you rest from your labours and efforts and allow God's goodness to lead and feed you. God wants us to remember that He watches over us, feeding, guiding, and providing for us. If we forget this, we will wear ourselves out with our own efforts, but if we remember that He is the source of our life and every good thing in our life, then we can relax in Him and focus on worshipping Him and yielding to Him.

Jubilee is a time to let slaves go free, redeem what has been lost, and reach out and help family, neighbours, and those who cannot help themselves. In the year of Jubilee, even though you do not Plow, prune, or sow, you can still eat the fruit the ground produces.

Jubilee was a time to sound your trumpet of freedom!

Freedom from slavery to Satan.

Freedom from sickness and disease.

Freedom from debt to Satan and the world’s system.

Freedom from fear and,

A time of the commandment of blessing.

In conclusion, the Year of Jubilee is a powerful reminder of God's grace, mercy, and provision. It was a time of restoration, freedom, and new beginnings for God's people, where they were set free from bondage and debts and experienced a fresh start in life. Just as the trumpet sounded throughout the land to proclaim liberty, so does Jesus, our Jubilee, offer freedom and salvation to all who believe in Him. We find release from the burdens of sin, fear, and oppression in Him.

Jubilee teaches us to rest in God's provision, trust in His care, and extend His love and generosity to those in need. As we live in the freedom Jesus offers, we are called to share that freedom with others—whether through acts of kindness, helping those in need, or proclaiming the good news of salvation.

Remember that in Christ, every day can be a Jubilee, a day of freedom, joy, and blessing. May we live in this truth, resting in God's goodness and proclaiming His grace to the world.
