Never be afraid to ask a blessing from your father
Joshua 15:16-19 (AMP) 16 Caleb said, “I will give Achsah my daughter as wife to the man who attacks Kiriath-sepher and captures it.” 17 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s brother, captured it; so he gave him Achsah his daughter as a wife. 18 Now it came about that when Achsah came to Othniel, she persuaded him [to allow her] to ask her father for a field. Then she [rode up to Caleb and] dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, “What do you want?” Achsah answered, “Give me a blessing; since you have given me the [dry] land of the Negev (South country), give me springs of water, too.” So he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.
After receiving her land as an inheritance, she went to her father to ask for a blessing. Her father had promised that whoever conquered the city of Kirjathsepher would marry her. Othniel won the battle and received her as his wife. He was also given a piece of land, which Achsah called “the south land.” But she realised the land alone was not enough—they needed water to make it fruitful. So she went back to her father and asked him for springs of water as well.
Here are scriptures that support the principle of boldly asking a blessing from your Father — both earthly and especially your Heavenly Father:
Matthew 7:7–8 (NIV) "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened."
This shows that God encourages us to ask without fear, because He delights in giving good gifts to His children.
James 1:17 (NKJV) "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning."
It reminds us that blessings flow freely from our Father. Asking Him is not presumption but trust in His character as the Giver of every good gift.
3. Romans 8:15 (NLT) "So you have not received a spirit that makes you fearful slaves. Instead, you received God’s Spirit when He adopted you as His own children. Now we call him, ‘Abba, Father.’"
As His children, we never need to be afraid to come close and ask. He welcomes us to approach Him with confidence.
Achsah’s story reminds us that it is never wrong to ask our Father for more. She was not content with land alone; she asked for water because she knew fruitfulness required more than she already had. In the same way, we should not be afraid to come to our Heavenly Father with bold requests. He is not a reluctant giver but a generous Father who delights in blessing His children. Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given to you”. Every perfect gift comes from Him, and as adopted children, we can confidently cry out, “Abba, Father”. Therefore, never hesitate to ask your Father for a blessing. He is willing, He is able, and He delights in giving more than we could ever imagine.
