DAY 2 — Remove What Competes with God
*Scripture:* Hebrews 12:1 (NIV) “Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”
*Focus Thought*
*Hunger grows when distractions shrink.*
Spiritual hunger does not fade by accident—it is often crowded out. The writer of Hebrews reminds us that there are things in our lives that hinder us, even if they are not sinful in themselves. Weights, distractions, habits, and misplaced priorities can slowly dull our appetite for God.
Notice the wording: “throw off everything that hinders.” This is intentional and decisive language. Anything that competes for the place only God should occupy will eventually weaken our spiritual passion. What once felt harmless can quietly become heavy. What once energised us can begin to entangle us.
Distractions drain desire. When our hearts are overfilled with noise, activity, and constant stimulation, there is little room left for hunger. God is not asking us to remove things to punish us—He invites us to lay them aside so we can run freely, focused, and with endurance.
When we remove what competes with God, we make space for deeper intimacy. As distractions shrink, hunger grows. As clutter decreases, clarity increases. A lighter heart runs faster toward God.
*Action for Today:* Choose one distraction to fast from today. It may be a habit, an app, unnecessary noise, or anything that steals time and attention from God.
As you fast from it, intentionally turn your heart toward God in prayer or worship.
*Reflection Question:* What is currently dulling your appetite for God?
*Prayer:* Lord, show me what hinders my walk with You. Give me the courage to lay aside anything that competes with my love for You. Create space in my heart for greater hunger and deeper focus. I want to run my race free and wholeheartedly. Amen.
*Journal Prompt:* What is God asking me to lay aside in this season so that I can pursue Him more fully?
