18 October Numbers 12

Gossip

Numbers 12:1-2 (MSG) “Miriam and Aaron talked against Moses behind his back because of his Cushite wife (he had married a Cushite woman). They said, “Is it only through Moses that God speaks? Doesn’t he also speak through us?” God overheard their talk”.

Miriam and Aaron spoke badly about Moses as if some believers were gossiping about their leaders today. Through their mistakes, God teaches us the dangers of gossiping about leaders and being jealous of their position. From Moses' actions, God shows us how to react to gossip. He tells us to forgive those who speak against us and to pray for them.

Gossipers often aim to build themselves up by making others look bad and exalting themselves as knowledge repositories. Such people speak of the faults and failings of others or reveal potentially embarrassing or shameful details regarding the lives of others without their knowledge or approval. Even if they mean no harm, it is still gossip. Proverbs 20:19 (AMP) “He who goes about as a gossip reveals secrets; Therefore do not associate with a gossip [who talks freely or flatters]”. Lets see other verses that confirm the rottenness about gossip:

Proverbs 11:12-13 (ESV) “Whoever belittles his neighbour lacks sense, but a man of understanding remains silent. 13 Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets, but he who is trustworthy in spirit keeps a thing covered”.

Ecclesiastes 10:20 (MSG) “Don’t bad-mouth your leaders, not even under your breath, And don’t abuse your betters, even in the privacy of your home. Loose talk has a way of getting picked up and spread around. Little birds drop the crumbs of your gossip far and wide”.

In conclusion, gossip is a harmful and destructive habit that damages the reputation of others and reflects poorly on the one spreading it. As we learn from the example of Miriam and Aaron, gossip can stem from jealousy and pride, but it ultimately displeases God. Scripture clearly warns against gossiping, urging us to remain silent when tempted to speak negatively about others and to keep trust with those who confide in us. Instead of spreading hurtful words, we are called to act with wisdom, guard our tongues, and seek to uplift and encourage others. When faced with gossip, our response, like Moses’, should be forgiveness and prayer, trusting that God hears and values our integrity.
