Bring an Acceptable Offering to God

The story of Cain and Abel offers one of Scripture’s earliest insights into acceptable worship. While both brothers brought offerings to God, only one was accepted.

Genesis 4:4–5 (AMP) "But Abel brought the firstborn of his flock and the fat portions. And the Lord had respect (regard) for Abel and for his offering; but for Cain and his offering He had no respect. So Cain became extremely angry (indignant), and he looked annoyed and hostile."

Abel brought what was required, a blood sacrifice, symbolic of substitution and atonement. Cain brought produce from the ground, perhaps sincere, but not in alignment with what God desired. The distinction here is not about quality of gift, but about the posture of the heart and obedience to divine instruction.

True worship requires the right heart, the right offering, and the right motivation. Even today, God is not pleased with outward ritual but with inward repentance. This principle is echoed in the Psalms:

Psalm 51:15–17 (AMP) "O Lord, open my lips, That my mouth may declare Your praise. For You do not delight in sacrifice, or else I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. My sacrifice to God is a broken spirit; A broken and contrite heart , such, O God, You will not despise." Obedience is more desirable to God than even the most generous gift. Saul learned this lesson painfully when he offered what God had not asked for.

1 Samuel 15:22–23 (AMP) "Samuel said, ‘Has the Lord as great a delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices As in obedience to the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of divination (fortune-telling), And disobedience is as false religion and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He also has rejected you as king.’" The difference between Cain and Abel lay not in their vocation but in their attitude and spiritual discernment. Abel acted in faith, trusting God’s requirement for a blood offering.

Hebrews 11:4 (ERV) "Cain and Abel both offered sacrifices to God. But Abel offered a better sacrifice to God because he had faith. God said he was pleased with what Abel offered. And so God called him a good man because he had faith. Abel died, but through his faith he is still speaking." Scripture makes the contrast sharper still. Cain did not act out of faith but from self-will.

1 John 3:12 (ERV) "Don’t be like Cain. He belonged to the Evil One. Cain killed his brother. But why did he kill him? Because what Cain did was evil, and what his brother did was good." Charles Spurgeon provides a profound reflection on this contrast: “Cain cared nothing for Christ; he was not willing to confess his sin. He had no objection to present a thank-offering, but a sin-offering he would not bring. He did not mind bringing to God that which he thought might be acceptable as a return for favours received, but he would not bring to God an acknowledgment of his guilt, or a confession of his inability to make atonement for it, except by the blood of a substitute.”

Abel’s sacrifice pointed forward to Christ. Cain’s rejected offering reminds us that religion without repentance is lifeless. Thus Faith remains the key that unlocks God's acceptance. It must be a faith born of humility, obedience, and reverence.

Hebrews 11:6 (ERV) "Without faith no one can please God. Whoever comes to God must believe that He is real and that He rewards those who sincerely try to find Him."

In closing, the call of Genesis 4 is this: worship God in truth. Bring not only the right offering, but the right heart.
