A Foreshadowing of Christ – The First Sacrifice
After Adam and Eve disobeyed God, their attempt to cover their sin was insufficient. They used fig leaves to cover themselves, but the Lord provided something far more meaningful.Genesis 3:21 (AMP) "The Lord God made tunics of skins for Adam and his wife and clothed them."This is the first recorded sacrifice in Scripture. It was not man who shed the blood—it was God. Their effort to fix their wrongdoing was inadequate; only through the shedding of blood could sin be covered. The principle of atonement is later established in the Law:Leviticus 17:11 (AMP) "For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement, by reason of the life ." And this principle carries over into the New Testament:Hebrews 9:22 (AMP)"In fact under the Law almost everything is cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness ." God Himself sacrificed an innocent animal to clothe Adam and Eve. The blood was shed not for the sake of the guilty, but by the death of the innocent. This is a profound foreshadowing of the ultimate sacrifice—Jesus Christ. The theological message is striking: God covers our shame. He provides the substitute. He takes the initiative. He makes a way for restoration. God covered Adam and Eve with skins, clothing them in the innocence of another. Similarly, He would clothe us with the righteousness of Christ.2 Corinthians 5:21 (AMP)"He made Christ who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that in Him we would become the righteousness of God ." From the very beginning, we see God’s redemptive plan taking shape. Just as He shed the blood of an animal in Eden, He would one day send His Son to shed His blood for all of mankind. In both cases, salvation was initiated by God, not man. The only thing He requires from us is to repent and believe.
