Face to Face with God

Deuteronomy 34:10-12 (AMP) “Since that time no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, [none equal to him] in all the signs and wonders which the Lord sent him to perform in the land of Egypt against Pharaoh, all his servants, and all his land, and in all the mighty power and all the great and terrible deeds which Moses performed in the sight of all Israel”.

What a fantastic description! So much can be said about Moses, but here he is called a man who knew the Lord face to face, personally and intimately. Think about that! If this doesn’t amaze you, you may not fully grasp who the Lord is. He is the Holy God, the Creator of the universe. Moses is at the end of his journey in Deuteronomy. He won’t enter the Promised Land because of his sin, he didn’t always treat God as holy. Yet, despite his sin, Moses had this close, personal relationship with the Holy God of the universe.

Like Moses, we can today, through the salvation of Jesus, have a close relationship with God. John 15:15 (AMP) “I do not call you servants any longer, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you [My] friends, because I have revealed to you everything that I have heard from My Father”. Our hope is confirmed by 2 Corinthians 3:12-17 (ESV) “Since we have such a hope, we are very bold, not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face so that the Israelites might not gaze at the outcome of what was being brought to an end. But their minds were hardened. For to this day, when they read the old covenant, that same veil remains unlifted, because only through Christ is it taken away. Yes, to this day whenever Moses is read a veil lies over their hearts. But when one[a] turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord[b] is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom”.

Seeing God face to face is knowing Him by perceiving or experiencing Him directly and clearly. If we want God’s face to shine on us, it is indispensable for us to quiet ourselves before Him, pray, and seek Him. John 4:23-24 (ESV) “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth”.

Through prayer, reading, and pondering God’s words, I gained some understanding of His will. Once I understand God’s will for my life, I live accordingly. John 14:23-24 (ESV) “Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me”. Jesus urges us to abide in Him: John 8:31 (ESV) “So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples”.

In conclusion, Moses’ unique relationship with God, described as “face to face,” is a powerful example of the closeness we can aspire to in our walk with the Lord. While Moses was a man with shortcomings and sin, he still experienced a personal, intimate connection with the Creator. Today, through Jesus Christ, we are invited into an even greater relationship with God—one not limited by veils or barriers but marked by freedom, boldness, and the Spirit's presence in our lives.

True intimacy with God requires intentionality. We know Him more deeply through prayer, worship, and living according to His Word. Loving God means obeying His Word, and in doing so, we welcome His presence into our lives.

Let us strive to live as faithful disciples, abiding in His Word, worshipping in spirit and truth, and seeking His will for our lives. As we do, we will experience the joy and peace of a life where God’s face shines upon us, guiding and filling us with His love. Just as Moses was known for his relationship with God, may we be recognised as people who walk closely with the Lord.
