10 December Deuteronomy 30

Your Future, Your Choice!

Deuteronomy 30:19-20 (NIV) “This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob”.

Moses is speaking to the Israelites at the end of his life. They had spent about 40 years wandering in the wilderness because the older generation, who refused to enter the Promised Land, had died. Only those who were under 20 years old at that time were still alive, along with many others born during those years. This new generation had not seen the plagues in Egypt, the parting of the Red Sea, or God's powerful presence when He gave the Law.

Moses reminds them of these important events and what God expects from them. He urges them to renew their commitment to God and to follow Him faithfully. Moses explains that if they obey God, they will experience life and blessings. But they will face death and destruction if they disobey and turn away from Him. God has given them a clear choice: life or death.

When it comes to our ultimate destiny, we have a choice. The Bible shows that your future depends on your choice. Consider what it says. You can choose life or death. To gain those blessings, we must “choose life.” How? ‘By loving God, listening to his voice, and having a relationship with Him.

Choosing life involves loving God - Deuteronomy 6:5 (NIV) “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength”.

Choosing life means walking in God’s ways and listening to his voice. Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV) "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight”.

Choosing life means having a relationship with God. - John 17:3 (NIV) "Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent”.

Choosing life means turning away from what destroys and stepping into the abundant life God has planned. To choose life is to choose God, the source of all that is good, true, and eternal. Now choose life, because a life surrendered to God is a life fully lived.

The choice between life and death is as real for us today as it was for the Israelites in Moses' time. God, in His love and mercy, has laid out a clear path: a life of blessing, purpose, and eternal relationship with Him. Choosing life means actively loving God with all our heart, walking in His ways, trusting His guidance, and embracing the relationship He offers through Jesus Christ.

This decision is not just about avoiding destruction, it’s about stepping into the abundant life God has planned for us. It’s about aligning our hearts with His and experiencing the fullness of His blessings. As Moses urged the Israelites, so we are called today: “Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.” Make the choice to trust God, follow His voice, and live in the hope and joy of His promises. Your future truly is your choice—choose wisely, choose life.
