5 May Job 5

In Job 5, Eliphaz urges Job to seek God’s wisdom and not be resentful of his suffering. He asserts that suffering can refine and discipline, and that God ultimately brings restoration and blessings after hardship.

God is our only hope in times of trouble

In Job 5:6-9 (NIV), Eliphaz continues to advise Job, reminding him that hardship doesn’t emerge out of nowhere; rather, trouble is part of life, as natural as the sparks that rise from a fire. He tells Job that, despite this, there is hope if he seeks God. Eliphaz urges Job to appeal directly to God, placing his cause before Him, for God performs miracles that are beyond human comprehension.

Eliphaz’s plea is not just a call for prayer; it is an urgent reminder that God is the only one who can save Job from his current plight. In the Message translation, Eliphaz expresses this even more clearly: "If I were in your shoes, I’d go straight to God, I’d throw myself on the mercy of God. After all, he’s famous for great and unexpected acts; there’s no end to his surprises." Eliphaz wants Job to remember that God’s power is limitless and that, despite how bleak things seem, God is capable of bringing about the unexpected.

Relating to our lives In our own lives, we may face similar moments of despair—where discouragement, depression, or doubt overtake us. Yet, Eliphaz’s advice rings true for us as well: we are to go to God, not away from Him. When we feel overwhelmed by the weight of life’s troubles, we must not forget that our God is a miracle worker, always ready to intervene. Jesus Himself warned that in this world, we will face difficulties, but He assures us that He has already overcome the world. In John 16:33 (MSG), He says: “In this godless world you will continue to experience difficulties. But take heart! I’ve conquered the world.” This promise of victory is available to us through Christ.

Psalm 46:1-3, 7, 10-11 (NKJV) reinforces this message by reminding us that God is our refuge and strength in times of trouble: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea… The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.” No matter the turmoil or chaos around us, God is our refuge, and we can find peace in His presence.

Finally, in times of hardship, let us heed Eliphaz’s words: turn to God. He is the only one who can perform wonders and miracles that bring us peace and restoration.
