I lift my eyes to you, O God

Psalm 123:1-4(NLT) I lift my eyes to you, O God, enthroned in heaven. We keep looking to the LORD our God for His mercy, just as servants keep their eyes on their master, as a slave girl watches her mistress for the slightest signal. Have mercy on us, LORD, have mercy, for we have had our fill of contempt. We have had more than our fill of the scoffing of the proud and the contempt of the arrogant.

In Psalm 123, as the Psalmist approaches the throne of God, he lifts his eyes to the Lord’s heavenly throne and prays for mercy, grace, and favour so that he can continue the journey into God’s presence.

So, where do we look for help, in this dark and troubling world? To our heavenly God, we look to God, not to avoid difficult times, not to gain acceptance, not to get instruction, not to be cared for, but to get one thing - till He shows me mercy.

The Hebrew word for mercy is hanan, and can mean mercy, grace, or favour. The best way to read this is as a plea that God will bestow His favour upon His children.

So, where do we look in this troubled world? Where do we look for mercy, grace, and favour? We look to God. No matter what our situation is, we can look expectantly to God and ask intensely for favour from God. He will respond in His time and according to His will. Don’t give up.

Pray this prayer: “I lift my eyes to you, O God, enthroned in heaven.”
