Choose a Good Name

Proverbs 22 brings to the fore, the importance of a good reputation and wise parenting. It states that a good name is more valuable than riches and highlights the value of humility and the fear of the Lord. The chapter also discusses the impact of upbringing on a child's character, warns against financial irresponsibility, and offers advice on generosity and the consequences of foolishness.

Proverbs 22:1 (AMP): "A good name is more desirable than great riches; and favour is better than silver and gold."

In our lives, we often weigh the value of wealth against our reputations. While riches—symbolised by silver and gold—hold certain allure, the Bible clearly prioritises a good name. If we must choose, "Choose a good name." This principle is especially vital for those in leadership roles within the church.

1 Timothy 3:1-7 (MSG) emphasises that aspiring leaders must embody qualities that reflect honour and integrity. They should be well-respected, committed to their families, gentle, knowledgeable, and able to manage their own affairs. The expectation is clear: how can one shepherd a congregation if they cannot manage their own household?

Consider King David, an exemplary leader whose honour was recognised by his people. 2 Samuel 3:36 (AMP) states, "And all the people took notice of it and it pleased them, just as everything that the king did pleased all the people." His integrity was a beacon that inspired trust and loyalty.

Good Reputation The Apostle Paul also prioritised a good reputation, declaring in Acts 24:16 (AMP), "In view of this, I also do my best and strive always to have a clear conscience before God and before men." A "good name" reflects integrity; it embodies trustworthiness and character.

While wealth is not inherently evil, possessing a good name surpasses all earthly riches. As stated in Ecclesiastes 7:1 (ESV), "A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of birth."

To cultivate a good name, let us embrace Proverbs 3:3-4 (ESV): "Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favour and good success in the sight of God and man." By living with integrity, we not only honour ourselves but also reflect God's love and wisdom to those around us.
