DAY 5 — Zeal Resists Lukewarmness

Revelation 3:15–19 (NIV) “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.”

Focus Thought: Jesus’ words to the church in Laodicea are strong because lukewarmness is spiritually dangerous. The greatest danger was not that they had completely rejected God. They had simply become comfortable without deep dependence on Him. They thought they needed nothing. That is often where spiritual lukewarmness begins. When prayer feels optional. When worship becomes routine. When obedience becomes selective. When conviction becomes easy to ignore. When we can live for long periods without genuine hunger for God's Presence.

Jesus does not expose lukewarmness merely to condemn them. He says, “Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline.” His correction expresses love. He wants their hearts back. That means the answer to lukewarmness is not pretending to be passionate. It is repentance. Hosting His Presence means allowing Jesus to confront areas where familiarity has replaced wonder and comfort has replaced surrender. Ask yourself honestly: Where have I become spiritually casual?

Perhaps you once prayed passionately for something you now barely mention. Perhaps worship once moved your heart, but distraction has slowly taken over. Perhaps you once responded quickly to God but now delay obedience.

Do not condemn yourself. Respond to His invitation. Repentance is simply turning back. Turn back to hunger. Turn back to prayer. Turn back to first love. Turn back to surrendered obedience. You do not have to manufacture fire. Return to the One who lights it. Revival begins personally when we refuse to make peace with lukewarmness.

Action for Today Identify one area of spiritual complacency and deliberately turn back toward God.

Reflective Question: What area of your life did God begin reigniting today?

Prayer: Lord, forgive every place where I have grown spiritually cold. Awaken my heart and restore holy passion. Amen.

Journal Prompt: Where have I become spiritually comfortable?
