Victory Rests with the Lord
Proverbs 21 highlights the sovereignty of God over human plans and actions. It reasons about the importance of righteousness, justice, and wise decision-making. Wealth gained through dishonest means is deemed worthless, while the diligent are rewarded. The chapter also underscores the significance of humility and the value of a controlled spirit. Ultimately, it reinforces that true success comes from aligning with God’s will.
Proverbs 21:31 (NIV) reminds us, "The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the Lord." This verse teaches us that while our preparation is essential, it is ultimately God who grants victory. We must do our part—preparing and taking practical steps—yet recognise that our strength, capabilities, and resources are insufficient without divine intervention.
When we place our efforts in God’s hands, He transforms our small contributions into significant victories. Our faith and trust in Him empower us to face challenges with assurance, knowing He will fight on our behalf. As Psalm 20:7-8 (ESV) states, "Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. They collapse and fall, but we rise and stand upright." Our reliance should not be on worldly means, as emphasised in Psalm 33:17 (ESV): "The war horse is a false hope for salvation, and by its great might, it cannot rescue."
Proverbs 16:3 (AMP) urges us to "commit your works to the Lord , and your plans will succeed ." The Voice captures the essence of our dependence beautifully in Proverbs 21:31: “No matter how well you arm for battle, victory is determined by Him.” We must strive to do our best, as God expects, but without trust in Him, we risk failure.
Facing Battles
As we face our battles, remember the reassuring words of 2 Chronicles 20:15b (TLB): "Don’t be afraid! Don’t be paralysed by this mighty army! For the battle is not yours, but God’s!"
In conclusion, let us heed Ephesians 6:10-12 (The Voice): "Finally, brothers and sisters, draw your strength and might from God. Put on the full armour of God to protect yourselves from the devil and his evil schemes. We’re not waging war against enemies of flesh and blood alone. No, this fight is against tyrants, against authorities, against supernatural powers and demon princes that slither in the darkness of this world, and against wicked spiritual armies that lurk about in heavenly places." Victory indeed rests with the Lord, and in Him, we find our strength.
