Be an Evangelist
Luke 10:1-9(NKJV) After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go. Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves. Carry neither money bag, knapsack, nor sandals; and greet no one along the road. But whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on it; if not, it will return to you. And remain in the same house, eating and drinking such things as they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house. Whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you. And heal the sick there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.”
Jesus trained twelve disciples, who were ordinary people, to take His message to the ends of the earth. In Luke 10 He also sent seventy to take the message ahead of Him. He taught them how to become an Evangelist.
Four steps can be extracted from Jesus’s commands in the above passage to give the ordinary Christian some guidelines for following Jesus in society today.
The steps are: • Step 1 Bless: Start by asking the Lord for His blessing, peace and love on all places and the people where you move during every day, also on the tasks that you do. This is usually a silent prayer and mostly with open eyes! Observe your own reactions. Do you remember to do it? How does it feel when you do? • Step 2 Build Relationships/Fellowship: Observe the people around you at work, school or wherever you move during the day. Do some of them need Jesus’s salvation or His healing of the broken-hearted? You do this by observing their speech and actions – their fruit. Identify some, that you feel you should build a relationship with, to win them for Christ or back to Christ – no matter how hopeless the situation may look. • Step 3 Meet Needs: Listen carefully to the talk about perceived needs of those around you. Maybe you see the need even though it is not mentioned. Endeavour to assist or encourage. Or you may want to place the situation in the hands of the Lord by praying silently. You may even ask some if you may pray with them about the matter. • Step 4 Tell about Jesus: Tell the Good News about Jesus’s salvation and lead them to Christ.
1 Peter 3:15-16(NLT) Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your hope as a believer, always be ready to explain it. But do this in a gentle and respectful way. Keep your conscience clear. Then if people speak against you, they will be ashamed when they see what a good life you live because you belong to Christ.
