The wonders of God

Psalm 114 describes the marvel of God's intervention by recounting Israel's exodus from Egypt to the Promised Land. In just two verses, we transition from Egypt to the Promised Land and from God’s supposed absence to His obvious presence.

Psalm 114:1-2(NKJV) When Israel went out of Egypt, The house of Jacob from a people of strange language, Judah became His sanctuary, And Israel His dominion.

This passage reminds Israel of their transformation into the sanctuary and dominion of God, who seemed absent for so long. God’s way of revealing His presence was so miraculous that even the forces of nature and the foundations of the created order responded in astonishing ways.

Psalm 114:3-6(NKJV) The sea saw it and fled; Jordan turned back. The mountains skipped like rams, the little hills like lambs. What ails you, O sea, that you fled? O Jordan, that you turned back? O mountains, that you skipped like rams? O little hills, like lambs?

The earth should both rejoice and fear the presence of God. The Lord, after all, is the Maker of heaven and earth and has always been here.

Psalm 114:7-8(NKJV) Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, who turned the rock into a pool of water, the flint into a fountain of waters.

What a profound statement: Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord. It's awe-inspiring to think that the earth trembles at God's presence. Reflect on this: how often do we, as children of God, fail to notice His presence? Contemplating these urges, us to recognise God's presence in our lives, to tremble before Him, and to honour Him for His wondrous deeds and His majestic nature.
