21 March Proverbs 16

Personalised Reflection On Trusting God’s Plans

Proverbs 16 highlights the importance of aligning human plans with God's will, acknowledging that while people make plans, the final outcome is determined by the Lord. It highlights the virtues of humility, righteousness, and wisdom, contrasting these with pride and evil. The chapter also underscores the role of justice, patience, and self-control, stressing that the fear of the Lord leads to a better, peaceful life. Trusting God and acting with integrity brings success and favour.

Proverbs 16:3 reminds us: "Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans" (NIV). This scripture emphasises that when we trust our endeavours to God, He guides us towards fulfilment. The ERV version adds: "Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established." It’s a call to hand over our plans, ambitions, and dreams to Him, trusting His timing and direction.

However, life, as Ecclesiastes 9:11 warns, is unpredictable. It says: “The swift do not always win the race, nor do the mighty win the battle… because time and unexpected events overtake them all” (NWT). Despite our best efforts, challenges arise beyond our control. Even with talent, wisdom, and preparation, success isn’t guaranteed because life’s uncertainties — unforeseen tragedies or random events — can interfere.

This doesn’t imply that God is absent, but rather it teaches us humility and trust. We cannot plan every outcome; only God knows the full picture. In James 4:13-17, we're reminded that boasting about future plans is unwise, for “your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.” Instead, we should adopt the posture, "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that." This echoes the idea that our plans must align with God’s will.

God Willing The concept of Deo Volente—"God willing"—was commonly used to acknowledge this dependence on God’s sovereignty. Paul modelled this in his writings, always sensitive to God’s guidance. Sometimes we push for our will to align with God’s will, rather than seeking His direction. Do we truly listen to Him, or are we only seeking validation of our own desires?

Ultimately, Proverbs 16:3 encourages us to trust that if God is at the centre of our plans, success will follow. By committing every action to Him, we align our thoughts, desires, and pursuits with His divine will. When we seek His guidance sincerely, He ensures that our path will lead to lasting fulfilment, even when life’s uncertainties come our way.
