20 April Song of Solomon 3

In Song of Solomon Chapter 3, the Shulamite woman dreams of seeking her beloved at night, symbolising her deep desire. She recalls their union, illustrating her longing and the excitement of love. The chapter emphasises the joy and beauty of intimate relationships and the search for connection.

Have You Seen the One I Love?

In Song of Solomon 3:1-3 (NLT), the Shulamite woman expresses her deep yearning: “One night as I lay in bed, I yearned for my lover. I yearned for him, but he did not come. So I said to myself, ‘I will get up and roam the city, searching in all its streets and squares. I will search for the one I love.’ So I searched everywhere but did not find him. The watchmen stopped me as they made their rounds, and I asked, ‘Have you seen the one I love?’”

This poignant passage reflects a universal experience: times when we feel that God is far away. Many can relate to moments of desperate longing, questioning His absence during our struggles. Psalm 10:1 (NIV) captures this sentiment: “Why, Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?” Similarly, Psalm 13:1 (NIV) echoes this cry: “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?” Even Jesus expressed a profound sense of abandonment in Matthew 27:46 (AMP), asking, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

Perceived Distance In these moments of perceived distance, we can cry out to God, knowing He loves us and will never truly leave us alone. Lamentations 3:31-33 (MSG) reassures us: “The Master won’t ever walk out and fail to return. If He works severely, He also works tenderly. His stockpiles of loyal love are immense.”

The Psalms remind us of our calling to seek His face: Psalm 27:8-9 (ESV) states, “You have said, ‘Seek my face.’ My heart says to you, ‘Your face, Lord, do I seek.’” In moments of waiting, Psalm 37:7 (ESV) encourages, “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him.” Psalm 27:14 (ESV) further urges us to “Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!”

Even when God feels distant, we must remember His promise: “I will never leave you; I will never forsake you.” If you sense God hiding His face, it may be part of a greater purpose. Express your love for Him and your longing for His presence, and you may soon feel His loving gaze upon you again.
