Keep On Hoping

Proverbs 13 emphasises the contrast between wisdom and folly, highlighting the consequences of both choices. It implies the importance of listening to instruction and valuing discipline, as well as the role of wise friends in shaping one's character. The chapter illustrates that the diligent will reap rewards, while laziness leads to poverty. It also stresses that the righteous will be blessed, while the wicked will face ruin. Ultimately, it encourages a pursuit of wisdom and a life aligned with godly principles.

Proverbs 13:12 (ESV) states, "Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life." By implication this verse captures the emotional toll of delayed expectations. When our hopes are prolonged, we often grapple with disappointment and disillusionment, which can lead us to abandon hope altogether. Such was the plight of the children of Israel, who lost faith in their promise of entering the Promised Land, causing many to miss this monumental goal.

Despite the anguish that delayed hope can bring, it is crucial to hold onto our faith. Romans 8:25 (NLT) encourages us: "But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently." In moments of waiting, Lamentations 3:25-26 (ESV) reassures us, "The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD." Furthermore, Romans 5:5 (ESV) reminds us, "And hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us."

A Fulfilled Desire The latter part of Proverbs 13:12 tells us that “a desire fulfilled is a tree of life.” This tree symbolises renewal and vitality; when our desires are met, we experience a profound rejuvenation. Proverbs 13:19 (ESV) further states, "A desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul, but to turn away from evil is an abomination to fools."

In times when hope feels lost or deferred, we must anchor our trust in the Lord. As Psalm 39:7 (NLT) asks, "And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in you."

Finally, I echo the words of Hebrews 6:19 (NLT): "This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary." Let us keep hoping, for our faith is the bridge to our future.
