Amos 4:13 (NASB) “For behold, He who forms mountains and creates the wind and declares to man what are His thoughts, He who makes dawn into darkness and treads on the high places of the earth, The Lord God of hosts is His name.”

“Adon” in Hebrew means one possessed of absolute control. The plural form of this Hebrew word is “adonai” The word Adonai is simply the word for “Lord.” Lord is defined in English as “someone or something having power, authority, or influence; a master or ruler.”

The word is what is called an emphatic plural or plural of majesty. There is only one God, but the plural is used as a Hebrew literary tool for emphasis—in this case, pointing to the sovereignty of God. It as an expression of humble awe, as in "O Lord, Our Lord," or, "O God, my God."

The Greek word is “kurios or kyrios” —meaning: a supreme master.

Characteristics of those who know God as Adonai - The one that has called us, our Lord and Master. Acknowledge themselves as His servants, understanding God is Owner of all and they are stewards who have been declared worthy by Him to serve and who count it a privilege to serve. - 1 Peter 4:10 (NIV) “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”

Understand God as Master who can supply all our needs - Philippians 4:19 (NASB) “And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

We can do whatever God calls us to do. - Philippians 4:13 (NASB) “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”

The Name Adonai challenges every person who calls God "Lord" to be willing to live in a way that demonstrates His Lordship! In other words, the declaration "He is Lord" must be not only with our lips but also with our lifes!

Matthew 7:21 (NASB) “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.” Make Him your Lord. Is God your Adonai, your Master, or are you the "master" of your life?

Philippians 2:9-11 (NIV) “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."
