18 December 2022 - Christmas is a time when God reveals himself

John 1:14 (ESV) And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

During Christmas we celebrate how God made himself known to humanity on a very personal level by sending his Son to live among us. As Christ walked the earth, His presence specially revealed God’s glory. The Bible also tells us that God reveals himself to all, in a more general way, through the universe He created and fashioned for us to live in.

There is so much about God that man will never comprehend, even with all that has been revealed to this point. At Christmas, however, God chose to reveal the nature of His heart and mind towards His creation – that He loved them enough to sacrifice His son Jesus and that Jesus chose to become flesh and dwell on the earth.

The Bible says that God has revealed Himself to humanity in different ways, including through nature, our conscience, Jesus Christ and the Bible.

Nature reveals God - Psalm 8:3-4 (NLT) When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers— the moon and the stars you set in place— what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them?

Job 26:8 (NLT) He wraps the rain in his thick clouds, and the clouds don’t burst with the weight.

Our conscience reveals God to us - Romans 2:14-15 (NLT) Even Gentiles, who do not have God’s written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it. They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right.

Jesus Christ revealed God - Hebrews 1:1-2 (NLT) Long ago God spoke many times and in many ways to our ancestors through the prophets. And now in these final days, he has spoken to us through his Son. God promised everything to the Son as an inheritance, and through the Son he created the universe.

God also revealed Himself through the written Word, the Scriptures. The Bible is God's revelation of Himself to humankind. 2 Timothy 3:16 (KJV) All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

I conclude with Romans 1:20 (NIV) For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
