DAY 1 — Rest Comes from His Presence
Scripture — Psalm 62:1–2 (NIV)
“Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.”
Focus Thought: There is a kind of tiredness that sleep cannot fix. You can take a holiday and return tired. You can sleep for eight hours and wake up carrying the same heaviness. You can have a day without responsibilities while your mind continues running. Why? Because sometimes it is not your body that needs rest. It is your soul. David understood this when he wrote: “Truly my soul finds rest in God.”
He does not say his soul found rest because all his problems disappeared. He does not say his enemies vanished, his responsibilities became easier, or every unanswered question was resolved. His rest had a Person at its centre. God Himself. This is one of the great lessons of hosting the Presence of God: true rest is not primarily found in escaping life; it is found in encountering God in the middle of life. We often think: “If I can just finish this project, then I will rest.” “If this problem gets solved, then I will have peace.” “If the financial pressure lifts, then I can relax.” “If this difficult season passes, then I will be okay.” But something else always arrives. Another responsibility. Another decision. Another challenge. Another need.
If our rest depends entirely on circumstances becoming peaceful, we may spend most of our lives waiting to rest. God offers something deeper. He offers rest in His Presence.
This is why Exodus 33:14 is so powerful. Moses faced an enormous assignment, and God told him: “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” The answer was not the removal of responsibility. It was the addition of Presence.
God was essentially saying: “Moses, you will not carry this alone.” That changes everything.
Rest begins when you realise you are not alone. The situation you are carrying—God is there.
The family member you are concerned about—God is there. The ministry responsibility that feels too large—God is there. The decision you do not know how to make—God is there.
The future you cannot control—God is already there. Hosting His Presence means becoming more aware of who is with you than of what is against you. David calls God his rock, salvation, and fortress. Those are words of security. A restless soul is often searching for security somewhere else. Approval. Money. Success. Control. Recognition. Certainty. But none of these can provide lasting rest. Only God can become the unshakeable foundation of the soul.
Rest therefore begins with surrender.
You stop saying: “I must hold everything together.” And begin saying: “God, You are my Rock.”
You stop saying: “Everything depends on me.” And begin saying: “Lord, I will be faithful with my responsibility, but the outcome belongs to You.”
This does not make us passive. It makes us peaceful. We still work. We still plan. We still lead.
We still obey. But we no longer carry the weight of being God. There is tremendous freedom in that. Today, sit quietly in His Presence. Do not begin with everything you need from Him.
Begin with Him. “Lord, You are my Rock. You are my salvation. You are my fortress. My soul finds rest in You.” And allow His Presence to become the resting place of your soul.
Matthew 11:28 (NIV)“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Jesus does not merely offer a method for rest. He says: “Come to Me.” Rest is found in relationship.
“Our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” — Augustine
Action Set aside 10–15 minutes today simply to sit in God's Presence. Do not begin with your prayer list. Place your burdens before Him and say: “Lord, my soul finds rest in You.”
Reflection: What peace began to surface when you stopped trying to carry everything and rested in God's Presence?
Prayer: Father, my soul finds rest in You. Forgive me for looking for peace in circumstances, achievements, people, or control. Today I bring every burden into Your Presence. You are my Rock. You are my fortress. You are my salvation. Teach me to work without striving, lead without carrying unnecessary pressure, and serve without losing my awareness of You. Let Your Presence become the resting place of my soul. In Jesus' name, Amen.
