Jesus is our King, and we are His bride
The royal wedding depicted in Psalm 45 beautifully illustrates the love between Christ and His church. Christ is the King, and we are His bride, made beautiful by His love and care.
In Psalm 45:1(NLT) the Psalmist's heart is stirred by beautiful words: Beautiful words stir my heart. I will recite a lovely poem about the king, for my tongue is like the pen of a skillful poet. Here, David, with a message of excitement and an overflowing heart, invites us to behold the King in all His beauty. Verse 2a, His person is beyond compare, as the scripture says: You are the most handsome of all. This is echoed in Isaiah 9:6(ESV) For to us a child is born, to us a 42
son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Verses 5, He is a victorious King: Your arrows are sharp, piercing your enemies’ hearts. The nations fall beneath your feet. This triumph is proclaimed in Revelation 19:6b(ESV) Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns.
Verse 6a, He reigns forever: Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever. Similarly, Hebrews 1:8(ESV) affirms: But of the Son he says, 'Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.
Verse 7b highlights His anointing: Therefore God, your God, has anointed you. Luke 4:18-19(NLT) “The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.”
Verses 11, the King is Lord over his bride: For your royal husband delights in your beauty; honor him, for he is your lord. The Church is symbolised as the Bride of Jesus, beautifully portrayed in these words.
Verse 13 describes the beauty of the King's bride, referring to the Church: The bride, a princess, looks glorious in her golden gown. This imagery resonates with Ephesians 5:26–27(ESV) that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.
Verses 15 depict the marriage ceremony: What a joyful and enthusiastic procession as they enter the king’s palace! This joyous occasion is further celebrated in Revelation 19:7–8(ESV) Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.
Finally in Verses 16-17, we see that Jesus will be crowned King of kings, and we, His children, will become Christ-like people: Your sons will become kings like their father. You will make them rulers over many lands. I will bring honor to your name in every generation. Therefore, the nations will praise you forever and ever.
