DAY 5 — Live According to the Spirit, Not the Flesh

*Scripture* Romans 8:5–6 (NIV) “Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”

*Focus Thought: Holiness is choosing the Spirit’s desires over the flesh.*

Every day, we face a choice. Paul explains that our lives are shaped by what we set our minds on. When our thoughts are fixed on the desires of the flesh, the result is emptiness and separation from God. But when the Spirit governs our minds, the outcome is life and peace.

Living by the Spirit is not about perfection—it is about direction. It means continually turning our attention toward what pleases God and allowing the Holy Spirit to guide our responses, decisions, and attitudes. The Spirit leads us into life-giving choices, even when the flesh pulls us in the opposite direction.

Holiness is formed through daily surrender. Each time we choose the Spirit’s way over our own impulses, our hearts grow more aligned with God’s will. Life and peace become the fruit of a Spirit-led mind.

*Action for Today* Pause three times today and ask this question sincerely: “Holy Spirit, what pleases You in this moment?”

Listen quietly and choose to respond in obedience.

*Reflection Question* What difference did this awareness make in your thoughts, choices, or attitudes today?

*Prayer* Holy Spirit, help me to set my mind on what You desire. Teach me to recognise the pull of the flesh and to choose the way that leads to life and peace. I surrender my thoughts and actions to You today. Amen.

Journal Prompt: When did I sense the strongest contrast today between the flesh and the Spirit—and what choice did I make?
