How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!
In this Psalm, David praises the gift of unity among God’s people: Psalm 133:1-3(NIV) How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! It is like precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe. It is as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the LORD bestows his blessing, even life forevermore.
It is good and pleasant for God’s people to live together in unity because our harmonious and loving interactions please the Lord. If we live in unity, we reflect the integral nature of the unity between God, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This pleases God.
Romans 15:5-6(ESV) May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
David uses the metaphor precious oil poured on the head, running down on the beard, running down on Aaron’s beard, down on the collar of his robe to compare it with unity. This reflects the blessing of God’s presence, which enables His people to dwell together in harmony. The pleasant fragrance of unity causes us to become witnesses of Christ’s love to the world.
John 13:35(ESV) By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Ephesians 4:1-4(NLT) Therefore I, a prisoner for serving the Lord, beg you to lead a life worthy of your calling, for you have been called by God. Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love. Make every effort to keep yourselves united in the Spirit, binding yourselves together with peace. For there is one body and one Spirit, just as you have been called to one glorious hope for the future.
Galatians 6:2(ESV) Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
How good and pleasant it is when brothers and sisters live together in unity!
