DAY 3 — Discernment Helps You Recognise Good and Evil

Hebrews 5:14 (NIV) "But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil."

Focus Thought: Discernment is not developed overnight. It grows through spiritual maturity.

The writer of Hebrews explains that mature believers have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil. Notice the phrase: "By constant use." Discernment develops through practice. Just as physical muscles grow stronger through exercise, spiritual discernment grows stronger through consistent use. Hosting the presence of God accelerates this process because God's presence sharpens spiritual perception. Many believers mistakenly assume that discernment simply means identifying obvious sin. But true discernment goes deeper. Often the greatest challenge is not choosing between good and evil. It is choosing between good and God's best. Many options may appear attractive. Many opportunities may seem beneficial. Many paths may appear reasonable. Discernment helps you recognise which option aligns most closely with God's heart. The mature believer learns to ask deeper questions: Does this honour God?

Does this strengthen my relationship with Him? Does this align with the word? Does this reflect Christ's character? Does this lead me closer to God's purposes?

Hosting God's presence develops a sensitivity that goes beyond external appearances. The world often evaluates things based upon success, popularity, influence, or profitability. God evaluates things based upon truth, righteousness, obedience, and eternal value. Discernment allows believers to see beneath the surface. What appears attractive may actually be harmful. What appears difficult may actually be God's will. What appears insignificant may actually carry eternal significance.

The Holy Spirit continually trains believers to recognise these distinctions. This training often occurs through daily decisions. Every act of obedience sharpens discernment. Every time you choose God's way over your own preferences, spiritual sensitivity increases. Every time you respond to the Spirit's conviction, your ability to hear His voice grows stronger. Discernment protects God's presence in your life. It helps you avoid distractions that weaken intimacy. It helps you recognise influences that pull you away from God's purposes. It helps you stay aligned with Heaven.

Mature believers are not simply people who know more information. They are people who have learned to consistently recognise what pleases God. Hosting God's presence means continually allowing the Holy Spirit to train your spiritual senses. As He does, you become increasingly capable of seeing situations through Heaven's eyes and responding according to God's wisdom.

Philippians 1:9–10 (NIV) And this is my *Prayer:* that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,

God desires believers who can discern not merely what is acceptable, but what is best.

Action for Today: Evaluate one current situation by asking: "Does this truly align with God's heart?"

Prayer: Lord, continue training my spiritual senses. Help me recognise what pleases You and reject what does not. Teach me to see situations from Your perspective and to walk in wisdom. Amen.
